Roads have become an integral part of our life, allowing us to comfortably get from one point to another. Humanity quickly realized the advantage of creating such a network, already by the 1st century it existed throughout Europe and Asia.
Since the 16th century, a special department for the construction of roads and bridges began to work in France. The end of the 18th century was marked by the use of paving in the road surface. Stones in the form of cones were placed back to back on a sand or soil base. Roads of this type have proven to be both strong and durable.
However, the road network developed so rapidly that a new type of coverage was required. It was the asphalt, which first appeared on the sidewalks of the Royal Bridge in Paris in the 30s of the XIX century. Today in the world there are already about 25 million kilometers of roads. Only despite the already classic coating, some of them are very dangerous. Drivers are even afraid to drive there. Let's talk about the most dangerous roads in the world below.
Karakorum highway (Pakistan - China). The fame of this track is based on the fact that it is the highest mountain in the world. Unsurprisingly, this also implies increased danger. The road runs between the Chinese Kashgar and Pakistani Islamabad. Its total length is 1,300 kilometers. The construction of the road began in 1966; its route coincided with a part of the Great Silk Road. It took 21 years to build the road in complex devices. At the same time, the cost of the work was $ 3 billion. The construction site involved about 25 thousand workers and engineers, while a thousand people died. Traveling along the Karakoram road is fraught with a number of dangers. First of all, it is worth noting the site that lies in the states of Jamma and Kashmir. They have been a stumbling block between India and Pakistan for 60 years, so they often shoot here. It should be noted that there is practically no road surface on the highway. On average, there are about 30-40 meters of asphalted section per 10 kilometers of road. Drivers should also be wary of stone blockages on the passes and avalanches.
Road Hurghada - Luxor (Egypt). Luxor is known as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the ancient country. Here from the resort of Hurghada there is a 280 km highway. The length of the road is 1,850 kilometers, it was started to be built in 1906 to drive cattle. The fact is that at the beginning of the last century, cattle breeders in the north of the country seized monopoly access to the supply of meat for gold mines. To create competition, the authorities decided to build a road along which farmers from the east of the country could drive livestock for sale. The construction took 4 years, and the most difficult task was to equip wells along the road. Today, the highway is no longer in demand for its original purposes, and mostly tourists travel along it. The whole journey takes about 3 weeks. First, you need to stock up on fuel and provisions, because on the way there will be few places where you can replenish supplies. You will have to turn to the natives for help. Traveling along a deserted road through wilderness can bring any surprises.
Dalton Highway (USA). This track is the best in several nominations at once. First of all, it's worth mentioning that she is the most isolated. On a highway 667 kilometers long, there are only three villages with a total population of 60 people. Also this road is the most snowy. The road is rightfully considered one of the most "fabulous". Even its name is translated as "troll ladder". She walks along the Troll's Cap Mountain, past the Troll's Hut, there is even a Troll Church on the way. The construction of this fabulous road began at the end of the 19th century, but difficult weather conditions and mountainous terrain delayed work until 1936. And this mountain serpentine with 11 steep loops was opened personally by the king of Norway Haakon VII, who gave the name to the road. In winter, it will not work here - the track is closed, so it is better to plan a trip along it in the spring or summer. And it will be better if an experienced driver is at the wheel. Indeed, in some places the width of the road is only 3.3 meters, which makes maneuvers extremely difficult.
Tuktoyaktuk Road (Canada). It is already common for residents of the Canadian village of Tuktoyak and the town of Iuvik that the road between them exists only in the cold season. Col de Turini (France). This unsafe road lies in the French Alps, it is no coincidence that it is called one of the most driving in the world. It is located at an altitude of 1500 meters and stretches for 30 kilometers. There are 34 turns on the track, and there are practically no long straight sections. A winding stretch of this highway is part of the Monte Carlo Rally. Until 2002, the "Night of the Long Knives" was also held here. With the onset of darkness, races began, the light from the headlight cut the darkness in the mountains. Experienced sports car riders cover the road in 10 minutes, but ordinary drivers spend about an hour on this. After all, cars travel along the highway slowly one after another, because in some areas the width is only 3.3 meters. Overtaking is quite rare here - there are sheer cliffs on one side of the road, and an abyss on the other. At the same time, it often rains here, which makes the asphalt very slippery. Stelvio Pass (Italy). This road is considered one of the most winding in the world. The Queen of Zigzags is located at an altitude of 2500 meters. And it was laid back in 1820-1825, when it was required to connect Lombardy with the rest of Italy. Until the end of the First World War, the road also served as the border between Austria-Hungary and Italy. The mountain trail rises to the Prato Pass, located at an altitude of 2,757 meters. To get here, you will need to overcome 48 hairpins and 60 sharp turns. And this is despite the fact that the road itself literally slides between sheer cliffs and an abyss. Today, the highway is only open from July to September. But in the winter there is another transport - a sports sled. But even during a calm summer season, the trip can get very stressful. After all, a cloud may appear on the driver's path, or freezing rain will pass, which will make the asphalt a slippery roller.
Guoliang Road (China). The Chinese say that this road is unforgiving. Nevertheless, tourists constantly come here. For another 40 years, the track did not exist at all. The unfortunate villagers of Golian were forced to travel to the outside world by a risky stone staircase. But in 1972, local residents decided to change the situation. They began to make their own way across the mountain. The work took 5 years, the 1200-meter tunnel was opened on May 1, 1977. Even two cars cannot pass along this narrow road, so they usually ride a bicycle along it. The danger is represented by windows that are cut out for illumination along the route. There are cases when cars flew through them into the cliff. So it is not recommended for people with claustrophobia to ride this track.
North Yungas Road (Bolivia). The very nickname of this route - "Death Road", sounds quite eloquent. The highway lies in the mountains of the Bolivian province of Yungas, connecting the capital with the north of the country. And her nickname is associated with an incident that happened here in 1999. Then a car with eight tourists from Israel fell into the abyss. And in 1983, the worst accident in the history of the country happened on the road. Then the bus, which carried more than 100 people, fell into a sheer canyon. Until now, 200-300 people die on the road every year, while dozens of cars break into the gorges. Here, the most common accidents are head-on collisions. The width of the roadway along the entire length of the road does not exceed 3.5 meters. There are areas where two cars that have met have nowhere to even leave. Even in wider areas, this happens almost over a precipice. The most difficult road situation is aggravated by the fact that landslides and dense fogs are constantly encountered here. When the rainy season comes in Bolivia, the track becomes a real swamp. It also happens that some areas are completely washed away by streams of water.
